There is a moment in every British autumn when you realise the forecast has been "light rain" for eleven days straight and your toddler has worked out that puddles are the best thing ever invented. You can fight it, or you can buy the suit.

It is worth buying the suit. The NHS guidelines for under-fives say toddlers should be physically active for at least 180 minutes (3 hours) a day, spread throughout the day, including playing outdoors. For babies, it is plenty of floor play and at least 30 minutes of tummy time across the day. None of that pauses for October.

What to look for before you buy

  • A real waterproof rating. Look for a hydrostatic head figure in millimetres. The suits below are rated at 8,000mm to 10,000mm, which is proper rain territory, not "showerproof".
  • Taped seams. Stitching makes holes. Taped seams stop water creeping in at the knees, which is exactly where toddlers kneel.
  • Stirrups or booties. Elastic foot stirrups keep legs over wellies so water runs off rather than straight in. Some suits for younger babies have removable booties instead.
  • Room to layer. A thin, unlined suit over normal clothes works from September. Once it turns properly cold, either size up to fit a fleece underneath or go for a lined one.
  • Reflective details. It is dark by half four soon. Anything that helps you spot them in a gloomy park is a win.
Nobody has ever regretted buying the puddle suit. Plenty have regretted the cream coat.

Making the kit last

  • Rinse, don't scrub. Let the mud dry and brush it off, or hose it down. Follow the care label when you do machine wash.
  • Skip the fabric softener. It can clog waterproof fabrics, so check the label before it goes in with everything else.
  • Dry wellies upside down, away from the radiator, with newspaper stuffed inside if they took on water.
  • Buy one size up if you want it to see out the winter and next autumn too. Rolled cuffs are a small price to pay.

If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), you probably know that there are certain foods and nutrients that become especially important once you’re pregnant. But nutrition plays a vital role even when trying to conceive, much like laying a strong foundation before constructing a house.

Certain nutrients create that foundation by supporting egg and sperm health (yes, nutrition matters for both partners), hormone balance and creating a hospitable environment for a fertilized egg to implant. In fact, studies show that certain nutrients can help increase fertility and improve success rates for both natural conception and fertility treatments.

‍

In other words, nutrition is a key player in the TTC journey, but getting the right nutrients in the right quantities can be tricky. That’s where supplements come in. Just as you’d take a multivitamin to fill in nutritional gaps for optimal health, fertility supplements can give you that extra nutrient boost.
