What breastfeeding actually saves, and what it costs you

Formula can run to several hundred pounds in the first year, so breastfeeding often gets called free. The money side is real, but so is the invisible labour. An honest look at both.

Breast is cheaper is one of those phrases that is technically true and quietly unfair. It counts the money and ignores everything else, which is exactly backwards from how it feels at 3am on the fifth feed. Both sides of the ledger are real, so here is the honest version, money and all.

The money it genuinely saves

The direct cost of formula feeding in the UK typically lands somewhere in the region of several hundred to over a thousand pounds across the first year, once you add up powder, bottles, teats and sterilising. Breastfeeding avoids most of that outlay. If the budget is tight, that saving is not nothing, and it is fair to name it.

The costs nobody puts on the invoice

Free is not the same as costless. Breastfeeding is paid for in time and body: the cluster-feeding evenings, the being the only one who can do the night shift, the cracked early days, the appointments when it is not going smoothly. That labour is invisible precisely because it does not come with a receipt, which is why it so often gets left out of the who-does-more conversation at home.

Free is not the same as costless. The bill just lands on a different account.

What actually helps

Good support changes the maths more than willpower does: a knowledgeable midwife or health visitor, a local feeding clinic, and a partner who takes on everything that is not the feed itself. If breastfeeding is working for you, brilliant. If it is not, combination feeding and formula are not failures, they are tools, and a fed, thriving baby with a functioning parent is the actual goal.

Fed is the baseline

However your baby is fed, the version of you that is still standing matters too. Count the money honestly, count the labour honestly, and choose the feeding that keeps both of you going. There is no medal for doing it the hardest way.

Feeding is personal and this is general information, not medical advice. If you are struggling or in pain, speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP, or contact the National Breastfeeding Helpline.

If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), you probably know that there are certain foods and nutrients that become especially important once you’re pregnant. But nutrition plays a vital role even when trying to conceive, much like laying a strong foundation before constructing a house.

Certain nutrients create that foundation by supporting egg and sperm health (yes, nutrition matters for both partners), hormone balance and creating a hospitable environment for a fertilized egg to implant. In fact, studies show that certain nutrients can help increase fertility and improve success rates for both natural conception and fertility treatments.

In other words, nutrition is a key player in the TTC journey, but getting the right nutrients in the right quantities can be tricky. That’s where supplements come in. Just as you’d take a multivitamin to fill in nutritional gaps for optimal health, fertility supplements can give you that extra nutrient boost.
