Strong-willed toddlers: hanging on without breaking their spirit

The toddler who argues, refuses and negotiates everything is exhausting to parent and, it turns out, often growing into exactly the kind of adult the world needs. How to guide without crushing.

A strong-willed toddler is a person with strong opinions who has not yet learned to hide them. The refusing, the negotiating, the flat no to a coat in February: it is genuinely draining, and it is also a sign of exactly the trait we say we admire in grown-ups. The job is not to break that will, it is to keep it intact while slowly teaching it some manners.

Why strong will is a feature, not a fault

The child who pushes back is testing where the edges are, which is how small humans learn the world is stable. That same determination, a few decades on, is what lets an adult hold a boundary, stick with a hard thing, or refuse to go along with the crowd. It is worth reminding yourself of that at 8am in a doorway, mid-standoff, because how you respond now shapes whether they learn their voice is powerful or a problem.

Pick the battles that actually matter

Not every hill is worth dying on. Safety and basic kindness are non-negotiable: holding hands near roads, no hitting. Almost everything else, the mismatched outfit, the order they eat their dinner, the insistence on the blue cup, can be handed over without the sky falling. Saving your firm no for the things that count means it still lands when you need it.

The goal is not obedience. It is a child who can think for themselves and still hear you.

Give control where you safely can

A strong-willed child who feels powerless will find power in the one place left to them, usually a full-body refusal in the cereal aisle. Offering small, real choices heads a lot of that off: this jumper or that one, brush teeth before or after the story. You keep the outcome, they keep some agency, and everyone loses fewer mornings.

Discipline that channels, not crushes

Limits still matter, and they work best paired with connection rather than fear. Naming the feeling (you are cross we have to leave), holding the boundary anyway (and we are still going), and staying calm through the storm teaches self-control far better than shouting does. It is slower, it is less satisfying in the moment, and it is the version they will copy back to you in ten years.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for tailored advice. If your child's behaviour is worrying you or feels beyond the ordinary toddler storms, your GP or health visitor is a good place to start.

If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), you probably know that there are certain foods and nutrients that become especially important once you’re pregnant. But nutrition plays a vital role even when trying to conceive, much like laying a strong foundation before constructing a house.

Certain nutrients create that foundation by supporting egg and sperm health (yes, nutrition matters for both partners), hormone balance and creating a hospitable environment for a fertilized egg to implant. In fact, studies show that certain nutrients can help increase fertility and improve success rates for both natural conception and fertility treatments.

In other words, nutrition is a key player in the TTC journey, but getting the right nutrients in the right quantities can be tricky. That’s where supplements come in. Just as you’d take a multivitamin to fill in nutritional gaps for optimal health, fertility supplements can give you that extra nutrient boost.
