Anyone who has wrestled a carrier on with a crying newborn in one arm knows the problem. Straps everywhere, buckles behind your back, and a baby who has lost all patience by the time you're done. So a carrier that simply goes on like a jacket gets our attention.

That's the promise of the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Hold, the Swedish family company's newest carrier, developed with medical experts and tested by more than 400 families along the way.

What's different about it

A new integrated wraparound system is designed to fit all body types, and you put it on the way you would a jacket. A double-layered waist belt and padded shoulder straps spread your baby's weight evenly, so it stays comfortable as they grow heavier.

The buckles are silent, so you're not clicking and clacking right next to a baby who has just dropped off, and they have smooth edges. There's also an integrated shade that still lets air through and lets you see your baby, plus a built-in pocket for your phone or keys.

Who it's for

It's suitable from newborn to 18 months, from 3.2kg to 13.5kg and from 53cm tall, and adjusts to fit most wearers, from XS to XXL, so it can be shared between parents. Your baby can face in or, once they're ready, face out.

BabyBjörn says the carrier is acknowledged as hip healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Whatever carrier you use, The Lullaby Trust's sling safety advice is worth a read: keep your baby close enough to kiss, with their face visible and their chin off their chest.

Two fabrics, four colours

Choose brushed woven or airy mesh. The woven fabric is soft and cosy but strong enough for daily use, while the mesh is flexible and breathable, letting air through to help cool both of you down. Both are certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Class 1. It comes in Sand Gray, Light Green, Black and Cream.
