What is risky play?
Risky play in early childhood involves active, outdoor play that challenges children to test their limits and learn how to assess and manage risks. Children are encouraged to explore new environments, such as forest school, to be curious about their surroundings and develop self-risk-management skills, with the support of adults to keep them safe. Through this style of play, children can discover their boundaries and develop essential new skills, such as independence, problem solving, coordination and building their confidence.
What are the benefits of risky play?
Physical activity develops problem solving, co-ordination, concentration and strength, as well as self-confidence, and develops risk taking in a positive way. Bilton (2010) explained that, by being active, children improve their motor skills, and develop coordination, balance and body awareness. She also explained that engaging in exercise strengthens muscles, improves bone density, and helps to control breathing.

Children need opportunities to challenge themselves and learn to take risks in a controlled environment. Williams-Siegfredsen (2011), author and educator in outdoor education, believed that, if children were not exposed to risk, they were denied the opportunity to learn to address everyday challenges and problems. This view is supported by the Health and Safety Executive and the Play Safety Forum (2012) in Children’s Play and Leisure – Promoting a Balanced Approach, which states that the aim of play provision is “not to eliminate risk, but to weigh up the risks and benefits” (HSE). Risky play is therefore recognised as a vital element of outdoor learning that encourages healthy development in children.
Godstone Farm offers a wide range of fun, real-world opportunities for children to engage in risky play. For instance, meeting animals where the staff teach children how to keep safe when handling and feeding. The role of animals positively correlates with feelings of importance, social competence, and self-esteem. In addition to this, Nicola Henderson, CEO of Godstone Farm, says “animals teach kids about patience and self-control, since they don’t always behave the way we want them to. The animals can get overexcited, scared and bite/peck, so learning how to deal with these behaviours teaches children to be patient and have self-control. Children will learn to have soft but firm voices and how to be gentle and careful.” The Godstone Farm team has also found that spending time with animals can be incredibly therapeutic for children, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), you probably know that there are certain foods and nutrients that become especially important once you’re pregnant. But nutrition plays a vital role even when trying to conceive, much like laying a strong foundation before constructing a house.
Certain nutrients create that foundation by supporting egg and sperm health (yes, nutrition matters for both partners), hormone balance and creating a hospitable environment for a fertilized egg to implant. In fact, studies show that certain nutrients can help increase fertility and improve success rates for both natural conception and fertility treatments.
In other words, nutrition is a key player in the TTC journey, but getting the right nutrients in the right quantities can be tricky. That’s where supplements come in. Just as you’d take a multivitamin to fill in nutritional gaps for optimal health, fertility supplements can give you that extra nutrient boost.
